Veneers & Lumineers Q & A

What are veneers or Lumineers?

Dental veneers are thin sheets of porcelain made from a tooth-colored material. They cover the surface of your teeth to improve their shape, size, or length.

Lumineers are similar to veneers but are thinner and require less aggressive application techniques. They are quicker and easier to apply, so you get a perfected smile sooner with less invasive work. Dr. Greene uses both techniques to enhance your look, depending on your smile goals and needs.

What smile issues can be fixed with veneers or Lumineers?

Dr. Greene may suggest veneers or Lumineers to correct a number of cosmetic tooth issues. These include:

  • Discolored teeth that cannot be whitened with traditional whitening treatments
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven teeth or teeth with craters and bulges
  • Gapped teeth

Dr. Greene can evaluate your smile and smile goals to determine which option – traditional veneers or Lumineers – are best for you.

What are the benefits of veneers and Lumineers?

Veneers and Lumineers offer a natural-looking way to improve your smile. The porcelain from which the veneers and Lumineers are crafted do not generally irritate gum tissue and they are stain resistant. You can match the color of the veneers and Lumineers to your natural look, too.

If your smile can be corrected with Lumineers, you experience less aggressive application techniques and less invasive medical treatment.

Traditional veneers are generally thicker, so Dr. Greene must file down your existing tooth structure to allow them to fit. You may need shots and local anesthetics for this prep work as well as temporary veneers while you wait for the customized versions to come in from a lab. While veneers are a great choice if your smile needs this approach, if you only have mild irregularities, Lumineers can help you avoid some of this invasive work.

Your teeth require minimal to no prep prior to the adhesion of Lumineers, saving you time, discomfort, and the need for temporary fixes. Dr. Greene is a certified Lumineers provider.

What alternatives to veneers and Lumineers are available?

For whiter teeth without application of onlays, you may also opt for Lumibrite® – a professional whitening that gives you results in just 30 minutes of treatment time. Lumibrite contains hydrogen peroxide to brighten yellowed teeth, and Dr. Greene may use a specialized light to intensify the whitening effect.
